Pocket watch- The Style Statement

There was a time in the old past before the 16th century, when there was the age of pocket watches and every time conscious person was having a pocket watch either inside his pocket or sometime it was used to hang along with his pants or other cloths close to the waist. It is said that the time returns one day and the same is the case with these types of watches now days. The pocket watch has again come in the lime light and is taking its place as the style statement among the peoples of all the ages whether teens, adults or old aged.  At the time of World War I, there was transitional phase of the pocket watch between the wrist watch and these type watches.  For security reasons, generally there is attachment of a beautiful and variously designed chain made up of metal or some other material. This chain prevents the pocket watch from being dropped by fault.  Besides using chain, sometime a small and stylish leather fob is used to mount the watch.  This fob also possesses a cover or flap for protecting the crystal and face of the pocket watch.

In the 16th century, the watches were having only hour indicator until the 17th century when the minute indicator was introduced.  In the 19th century, at the time when the railroading was started and spread its use, there was a train accident in US because of the faulty watch of the rail engineer. Thereafter, it was decided to devise a reliable and précised watch in order to get the perfect time.  They were called as railroad chronometers.  In the late 19th century, there were set the strict set of rules and regulations regarding the use of perfect timings using the pocket watch as for as the rail system was concerned.

There are main types of pocket watch the first being the open face watch and the second hunter-case watch. In the former type of watch, the crystal is bare and there is no covering on it. In the later type of watches, the crystal as well as the watch dial is covered with a protective lid. The lid protects the watch from the dangers of the scratches, unwanted touch, dust and debris. Depending on the movement, the pocket watch is of four types such as stem-wind, pin-set; stem-wind, lever-set; stem-wind, stem-set and key-wind, key-set based on the system of time set.
