Pocket watches went out of style with the horse and carriage more than seventy years ago,Pocket watches – great items for all wealthy collectors Articles and men stopped carrying them at around the same time as they stopped wearing the waistcoat, as they were increasingly replaced with wrist watches. Today they are revered for their historical value, but once upon a time it was with great pomp and flourish that a man pulled out his watch from his waistcoat pocket to see what time it was.

Anyone insisting on owning a pocket watch today should be admired for his taste in the glories of the past, and there are many lovely pocket watches available today that will not break your budget. In fact, an American pocket watch dating back to the 19th century can easily be yours for unimaginably low prices that you never imagined were possible, with the craftsmanship being comparable to most modern watches today. There are many other watches available from higher end watch manufacturers or from antique dealers, but one should be prepared to pay through the nose for one of these. Several renowned watch companies are reviving the interest in pocket watches by offering lovely, but admittedly overpriced models for sale, and it is hoped that other manufacturers will take interest and attempt to carry on the tradition. However, despite the fact that many classic watches are very easily available, the best bet for a pocket watch would be a vintage one.

There were some very well reputed players in the watch market who were well known for their pocket watches and very seldom did any other company come close to what these companies could achieve. But this craft started declining around 70 years ago as people gradually switched to wrist watches, and the effects of the Great Depression started to ripple over to the watch industry.  The change in tastes towards wrist watches and the worsening economic conditions gradually spelt the death of the pocket watch industry and many watch manufacturers eventually discontinued the models that they produced.

But some companies continued to churn out models of pocket watches even though their levels of production had decreased dramatically, maintaining their tradition of style and quality over the years. While they serve no useful purpose in this day and age, these watches have become collectors’ items today and fetch a very high price among discerning collectors who know well what these items are worth.
