The far corners of the world is seeing a significant increase of visitors. This could be due in part by the many explore and nature programs that populate the TV channels. Who would have ever thought that cannibals would be part of a TV show or that they would even agree to be filmed. It is the technological advances with much of this stuff that makes these travels so much more accessible as well as safe. There are fabrics that are incredibly lightweight that can keep you warm or cold, so there is no need to carry as much weight as before. There are also a great many lightweight options for easily prepare-able food to take along.

One of the greatest advances in technology is the ability to stay connected anywhere in the world, no matter how remote using satellites. All the other advances are fantastic, but none has changed the world of the traveler more than a way to stay connected and communicate with the outside world. Satellite technology has made this very possible and real for today's world travelers to make calls, receive calls as well as using the internet anywhere on the planet.

The average Joe might not have a use for an internet connection while exploring the Amazon or hiking the north pole. But anyone should have a sat phone simply because it will be your only ticket out of many places. Not that you will be able to call a cab, but you could schedule to get picked by the charter plane up earlier than you planned.

We have all, for the most part, gotten used to calls, e-mails, texts and internet access 24/7 as an acceptable intrusion into our time and privacy and really can't imagine life any other way. The other very small percent of the population is kinda stuck with only limited options. If you are planning on that once in a lifetime exciting adventurous vacation to the amazing and unusual, you should at least have a rented sat phone in your possession while traveling, just for peace of mind that is well worth the added expense.
