Pocket watches made their appearance in 1510 in Nuremberg Germany when it was invented by Peter Henlein. At that time the pocket watches were bulky and were encased in cylindrical or spherical cases and worn round the neck. It was not until the next century that the so called pocket watches were carried in a pocket.

During those early times watches were considered a luxury since they were rare but towards the end of the 19th century hand made watches were more common.

Until the 19th century, there was no specific bar that the watchmakers had to adhere to. As a result the degree of accuracy of the pocket watches varied from one manufacturer to the other. During the 19th century the pocket watches gained in popularity and it was widely used. Due to this discrepancy, on April 19th 1891 there was a famous train wreck in Kipton Ohio. This was because the pocket watch of an engineer had stopped for four minutes resulting in two trains being on the same track and colliding with each other. In order to avoid further tragedies like this the American Railway System in 1893 set a high standard for pocket watches that were used by the rail road staff. This became a bench mark for quality pocket watches and carried the seal of rail road approved.

Where the pocket watches will be attached to will determine the type of chain. A T bar chain is used to fix the pocket watches to buttonholes in the waistcoat or jacket. Pocket watches fixed to a belt use a belt clip chain and the pocket watches fixed to a belt loop use a spring ring chain.
