Wrist watches are worn on the wrist and pocket watches are carried in pockets.

Pocket watches made their appearance in 1510 in Nuremberg Germany when it was invented by Peter Henlein. At that time the pocket watches were bulky and were encased in cylindrical or spherical cases and worn round the neck. It was not until the next century that the so called pocket watches were carried in a pocket.

During those early times watches were considered a luxury since they were rare but towards the end of the 19th century hand made watches were more common.

Where the pocket watches will be attached to will determine the type of chain. A T bar chain is used to fix the pocket watches to buttonholes in the waistcoat or jacket. Pocket watches fixed to a belt use a belt clip chain and the pocket watches fixed to a belt loop use a spring ring chain.

Pocket watches are divided into two categories. One type is the open face watch. Here, the watch case has no cover and the face is exposed. These types of watches are also known as side winder since the winding stem is set a 3.00. There are also models that have the winding stem at 12.00

The other style of pocket watches is the Hunter case watch. This is where the face of the watch has a cover that is hinged at 9.00 and a winding stem at 3.00

Both type of watches have the sub-seconds dial always at 6.00.Pocket watches are making a comeback and the fashion conscious or the collector can get these types of watches from any good watch store.
