There are constantly new Android handsets being released, although two which stand out are the Samsung Galaxy S and the HTC Desire. Both have been available for quite some time,The Samsung Galaxy S And HTC Desire Remain Successful Android Smartphones Despite Tough Competition Articles but they continue to sell well despite increasing competition and numerous options for consumers.

But why are these handsets so popular? This article will give an overview of the main specifications of each phone to see which one comes out on top...

Samsung Galaxy S

At the time of writing, the Samsung Galaxy S has sold over 14 million units. This makes it the most successful smartphone for the manufacturer. It is easy to see why it is so popular. The handset boasts features such as a hi res 4 inch touchscreen, 5 megapixel camera with HD video capture, a powerful 1 GHz processor and of course the Android operating system. One area where the Samsung Galaxy S stands out is multimedia. Numerous music and video file formats are supported, and the phone also features a TV out socket which allows the direct connection to a compatible TV. Social networking integration is also provided as standard in the form of FaceBook and Twitter apps which can be downloaded from Android Market, along with thousands of other apps from many different categories. Along with the hardware on offer, this makes the Samsung Galaxy S very powerful and versatile, and no doubt contributes significantly to its popularity.

HTC Desire

HTC is a company which is growing very rapidly. They release new handsets every few months, each one more innovative than the last. Although it has been available for well over a year, the HTC Desire still remains very popular. In fact it has won several awards, including “phone of the year (2010)” by T3 magazine. With such stiff competition, it must have impressive specifications to bag such a title. For starters, the handset brought HTC Sense to the wider audience. This is the manufacturer’s custom user interface for its Android phones. With every update, numerous ingenious and innovative features are added to make everyday use that little bit more convienent. Alongside this, a 5 megapixel camera, 1 GHz processor and a superb web browser all add to the appeal of the device.

Obviously, this article represents a brief overview of what each phone has to offer. But in my opinion, the Samsung Galaxy S seems geared towards the multimedia user, whilst the HTC Desire makes a great web browsing device. Generally though, each phone is something of a jack of all trades; handling any task you throw at it, rather than specialise in one area. If you have to choose between the two, it will surely come down to personal preference. Maybe you prefer HTC or Samsung, or the styling of a particular device though. But we can clearly see that each of these handsets is a great ambassador to the Android operating system, with each handset perfectly geared to making the most of the popular software.
