In order to use Google voice you need to have a Google account, a laptop or mobile phone with internet connectivity initially when you sign up, U.S. phone number which is used to forward calls after ringing.

You should note that Google Voice is available to the users in US only. Those outside US can use Hangouts to make calls.

You can follow the below steps to sign up for Google voice and get your Google voice number.

Before doing anything you should make sure that your phone is on and it is receiving texts. You can check this by asking Google to send your phone a text with a code. If you receive the code from Google that means your phone is receiving texts.

1. Now, if you are using Android device first download the Google voice app on your device.
2. Once the app is downloaded, open the app on your device.
3. Now, with your existing Google account username and password, sign in.
4. Now you can review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Once you are done reviewing you need to tap Continue. You need to tap the Search option now to choose your Voice number.  You can search by city or area code for a number and if there is no number available in the area you are searching for, you can try to search in the nearby area.
5. Once you get the number you want, you need to tap select next to the number.
6. Follow the further on-screen instructions to complete the process.
