A Few Guidelines on Egyptian EtiquetteHere you'll find some common guidelines on the Egyptian etiquette. When you build your own trip to any new country it is important to understand the social and cultural customs unique to that country, in order to show respect to the local people and their way of living. One way of doing this is to bear in mind what you decide to wear, and be aware of how this may be interpreted by a different culture. This particularly applies to women, as the Egyptian culture dictates that women should always dress modestly. Short skirts for example are frowned upon and both men and women should always have their shoulders covered. Attire is particularly important when entering a mosque, as you should always remember to remove your shoes; not doing so would be seen as an insult and a sign of disrespect. I have found that when you adhere to these rules, you are shown a lot more respect from the locals and you feel like you are blending in more with the local culture. You can follow this etiquette whether you are doing an Egypt desert tour or Nile cruise trip. Aside from your outward appearance, there are other situations you may find yourself in whereby you are expected to adapt according to social mores. If invited to an Egyptian’s house for dinner, you would always be treated like a king or queen by the host and fed extremely well, as hospitality is extremely important. Firstly, you should remove your shoes on entering the house, compliment the host on how nice their home is, and then wait for them to tell you where to sit. Eat with only your right hand and it is a good idea to leave a small amount of food on your plate to show that you have finished eating, as the host will probably keep filling your plate until they are convinced that you really are full.
