The town of Nainital is divided into two areas, Tallital and Mallital, with the Naini lake separating the two. On the southern side of the lake is Tallital, while Mallital lies on the northern side.

Also known as the Lake District of Uttarakhand, Nainital is home to six beautiful lakes:

 

  1. Naini Lake

Situated in the heart of the city is the famous Naini Lake. It is a natural freshwater lake and it offers a spellbinding view of sunrise and sunset. The lake has also been a prominent shooting location for many Bollywood films including Masoom, Kati Patang and Koi Mil Gaya.

 

  1. Sattal Lake

Another popular tourist destination and picnic spot is the Sattal Lake. As the name suggests, Sattal lake is made from seven inter-connected freshwater lakes that are surrounded by dense forests of oak and pine trees. These lakes are a home for many migratory birds, fishes and butterflies.

 

  1. Sariyatal Lake

Sariyatal is a small but beautiful lake located 5 kilometres from Nainital. This almost heart-shaped lake is jade green in colour and is surrounded by plush green landscapes. Sometimes also referred to as Saritatal, the lake is also famous for the Himalayan Botanical Garden, a famous centre for scientists and botanists.

 

  1. Bhimtal Lake

Bhimtal Lake is located in the quaint town of Bhimtal, 22 kilometers from Nainital. It is the biggest lake in the Kumaon region. The lake is a popular tourist attraction especially among adventure enthusiasts since it offers a number of water sports activities like boating and paddling. There’s also an island in the centre of the lake, which is a popular picnic spot.

 

  1. Khurpatal Lake

Located about 12 km from Nainital is Khurpatal Lake. It is a blue-green, emerald shaped lake, that has a good harvest of different species of fishes. This makes it a popular destination for angling – a traditional fishing technique. The pine and oak forests that surround the lake it make an excellent choice for nature walks, hikes and treks.  

 

  1. Naukuchiatal Lake

Naukuchiatal Lake, a nine-cornered lake near Nainital, is the deepest lake in Kumaon area. It is a popular tourist destination where one can enjoy activities like boating, paragliding and fishing. Naukuchiatal is also famous for the Escape festival, a music and art festival that happens in May every year.
