Its most prominent resident is Dame Agatha Christie, the Queen of Crime. This bestselling author of mystery novels has featured many places throughout Torquay. Among them are the prominent parks and gardens. These places are not only historical and significant to Agatha Christie fans but are also serene spots where you can relax and unwind after a day of hectic tours of Torquay attractions. They are also great places where you can rejuvenate before you return to the daily grind of work or study back home.  Here are some gardens and parks that have significance to the life and works of Agatha Christie.

Princess Gardens

The Princess Gardens, located near the Torquay Marina, is part of the Agatha Christie Mile and the Agatha Christie Literary Trail. For readers of Agatha Christie, this garden will be familiar as it is featured in her novel, The ABC Murders. The garden was opened in 1894 and was named after Princess Louise, the daughter of Queen Victoria. The gardens face the Torquay Harbour. The Victorian design includes ornate fountains and formal planting with lawns, large trimmed flowerbeds and palm trees from New Zealand. Today, the Princess Gardens host different events and festivals such as the well-known Agatha Christie Festival. Right near the area are other popular Torquay attractions such as the Princess Theater and the stunning Edwardian Pavilion.

Torre Abbey Gardens

 Torrey Abbey is popular for being the oldest building in Torquay, having been built in 1196. It houses many collections including the Agatha Christie Memorial Room. Torrey Abbey is surrounded by beautiful gardens. One of the popular sections of this garden is the Potent Plants Garden which was inspired by the poisons and antidotes used by Agatha Christie in her novels.  The head gardener created a garden that featured the different plants that were mentioned there but these are not really dangerous plants. The garden is designed as a form of tribute and entertainment to those who are interested in her life which is why it has become one of the most visited Torquay attractions. You can also find other interesting features in the garden such as the tombs of monks, original church ruins, a palm house and the best dahlia collections in the area. Exhibitions of local and visiting artists are also held in the garden.

Cockington Country Park

One of the well-known Torquay attractions is the 460-acre Cockington Country Park.  It is located in the pretty thatched village of Cockington which is just one mile from the Torquay seafront. This garden is part of the Agatha Christie Literary Trail since the young Agatha would often go to Cockington and take part in amateur dramatics. Her book, “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” is dedicated to Christopher Mallock who was once an owner of Cockington Court. While you are in the country park, visit the Church of St George and Saint Mary circa 1069 or follow the Murder Mystery Trail. You can have snacks at the Tea Rooms, explore the Court’s Craft Centre or ride the horse-drawn carriage from the estate to the village and back. Admission is free.
