Imphal - a bustling city in northeast India home to different ancient tribes

Imphal, a small heaven on Earth, is the capital of India's northeastern state of Manipur, signifying the "land of jewels". It is a beautiful city set on the centre of Manipur Valley and is the chief centre of governance, education, commerce, finance, and tourism. It is a melting pot of several cultures that were basically brought in by the people of numerous tribes who have been living in the hills and valleys of the region since several centuries. A majority of the total population of the city is formed by Meitei tribal people. Today, the rich history and the tradition of the tribes can only be deciphered from the local folklore, dance, music, oral traditions, etc. which are still very much in practice. The name "Imphal" is the distorted version of Yumphal that signifies "land of many villages". It is nestled in the best natural settings that include crisscrossing hills, valleys, and forests. Multiple rivers and their tributaries flow through it, making the land very fertile as well as enriching the wildlife. The natural beauty of the place is simply stunning and to add more to that the climate here is almost always temperate. At present, it is the largest and most developed city in the state housing several flourishing medium-scale industries, banks, educational institutions, hospital, restaurants, and hotels in Imphal.

For the tourists, the place is a perfect destination for an offbeat holiday. It is home to numerous tourist attractions and allures that date from the medieval era till the present era. It was the seat of many medieval kingdoms, the significant ones being Khunjaoba, Pakhangba, Khagemba, and Maharaja Bhagyachandra, and there are numerous monumental structures including the temples and ceremonial places still dotting the place. The history buffs will enjoy visiting the War Cemetery, which was consecrated as a memorial and token of respect for the British and Indian Manipuri soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Second World War. It is a quiet place and easily accessible. Each cemetery is beautifully kept and marked with bronze plaques. Additionally, the Kangla Fort is yet another prominent historical attraction of the city. It is the royal palace of the king of Manipur. It is grand and beautiful. Until 2003 Assam Rifles of Indian Army was in control of the fort and after 2003 the fort was opened for tourists.
