My Eatery Recommendations for Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a hidden gem of a holiday destination. Situated on the river Dart in south Devon, it is famous for its naval college which has trained the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, Prince Andrew and Prince William.

Dartmouth's charm is obvious with its cobbled streets, quayside, boutique shops and good restaurants. This article discusses some of the restaurants and other eateries I tried during a stay in a holiday cottage in 2010. The great thing about Dartmouth is that you can walk everywhere from your holiday cottage - which means you don't have to drive for your evening meal.

Dartmouth attracts many visitors every year - particularly during the annual regatta. It is this influx of visitors that is behind the growth of good quality eating places and when I visited in 2010 I thought it would be useful to put together a list of restaurants that I enjoyed so I would be prepared when I visit again (which I intend to). Be aware that many of the restaurants close on a Monday! Here is my list:

The Seahorse. We enjoyed good quality seafood (cooked over charcoal) in a relaxed atmosphere. The Seahorse is opposite the quayside so you can enjoy a walk afterwards. Just around the corner I recommend Bellini's Bar for a pre/post drink in a good atmosphere.

Anzac Street Bistro. A small restaurant (32 seats) but that does not detract from the great food which tasted great and is beautifully presented. All of their ingredients are fresh (you could taste this) and sourced locally - fish from Brixham, they grow their own vegetables, the meat comes from a nearby family farm - they even collect some ingredients from local hedgerows!

The Rockfish. To call this a fish and chip shop does not do it justice. The fish is very fresh and served with large (proper) chips. I also recommend you try their crab sandwiches which are fantastic. They offer a takeaway service as well as the restaurant. Be warned - this is very popular and you can't book so make sure you pick an off-peak time.

Jan & Freddie's Brasserie. This restaurant offers good food in a chic, relaxing environment. The food is good (they have a Michelin entry) and the service is excellent.

The Dolphin. I understand this pub reopened in early 2010 after a refurbishment. When we went it had a lively atmosphere and, although the food was standard fayre, the meals were a great surprise and exceptional value. A good selection of beers. I recommend a visit either at lunchtime or in the evening.

Finally, if you are keen on good food, you shouldn't miss the annual Dartmouth Food Festival which takes place in October. Started in 2002 it now attracts over 10,000 visitors and offers good food, master chefsFree Web Content, trade stalls and partying! Book your accommodation well in advance as Dartmouth gets very busy during this event.
