Park Lane, London has long been considered to be one of the premier locations in England’s capital. The assembly of Park Lane hotel in the area boast of five-star accommodations, which are certainly fitting for the various royal attractions surrounding it.
At Park Lane, tourists would be able to easily reach major points of interest in London such as Hyde Park, one of the largest parks in the city and noted for being a great favorite for leisurely walks, carriage rides, and horseback riding during the Regency period. A more recent landmark along Park Lane, particularly on its west border, would be the Queen Mother Gates, which are also referred to as the Queen Elizabeth Gates. The Queen Mother Gates today serves as one of the newer entrances to the park and had been constructed as a tribute to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, who is also fondly referred to as the Queen Mother. Funding for the construction and design of the gates had been raised with the help of various organizations and individual benefactors who were under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent.
On July 6, 1993, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth herself presided during the official opening ceremony of the Queen Mother Gates. Consisting of six gates made from a mixture of bronze and forged stainless steel, the Queen Mother Gates also had lamps and railings made from the same materials. Heat and natural oxides had been used to provide color for the gates and its creator, sculptor and metal artist Guisseppe Lund had intended its design to represent the various styles that make up the 20th century. Lund had been working in the industry for more than thirty-five years and, during the International Conferences of Blacksmiths in Hereford, Lund had worked in an advisory capacity with the Crafts Council of Great Britain.
Notable aspects of the design include a symmetrical and formal lower section, which later blends into a modern interpretation of Her Majesty’s coat of arms. The coat of arms of the Queen Mother features the Earl of Strathmore’s arms impaling the Royal Coat of Arms of the UK. The Earl of Strathmore had been the Queen Mother’s sire, and his coat of arms bore symbols such as langued and armed gules and a lion. The imperial crown surmounts the shield featured on the coat of arms and is supported by England’s crowned lion.
