The Top 5 Scenic Driving Roads in New Zealand.

This is your chance to virtually drive some of the most beautiful roads in New Zealand. This article covers the best 5 drives on the North Island and the South Island.

Driving in New Zealand is a beautiful adventure for the traveller wise enough to visit. It's got a great landscape for driving, and traffic is typically light. The well-maintained roads and amazing scenery provide ample opportunity to enjoy every kilometre of your campervan hire. Whether he's on the North Island or the South, there is plenty of splendour and wonderment to keep him entertained for days.

He could start with the famous Milford Road, located on the South Island, which has been dubbed one of the best drives in the world on more than one occasion. The abundant rain forests, shimmering lakes, vibrantly-colored orange lichen, mounds of green and brown moss, enchanting waterfalls, and rocky cliffs can hold their own in any natural beauty contest.

While driving on Milford Road, he is destined to encounter one of New Zealand's greatest and most popular attractions: Milford Sound. Milford Sound, a fjord that stretches for an astonishing 23 kilometres, is adjacent to the Tasman Sea, and offers fantastical views of pointy-toothed peaks wreathed in thick mists.

Also on the South Island, this bold vacationer may take State Highway 6 from Franz Josef Glacier to Wanaka. While travelling the estimated 3.75 hours, he would see a landscape worthy of any camera. The air is crisp, the water is clear, and there are a variety of restaurants and shops along the way. If the explorer was diligent and attentive, he may be able to spot a Fordland Crested penguin swimming in the ocean, or a seal showing off doing acrobatics.

For a day trip on the North Island, this intrepid voyager would do well to take State Highway 1 south from Kuratau Junction to Vinegar Hill. At only about 184 kilometres, it's a great way to see some of the most scenic stretches of New Zealand National Forest available by vehicle. With kilometre after kilometre stretching before him, he would be bound to see native birds, rodents, and even some larger wildlife on his journey. There are many places with wide shoulders, so a number of opportunities exist for him to capture that perfect photograph or video.

A weekend trip on the South Island would be an excellent opportunity for our travelling spectator to check out the beautiful eastern shore, and drive from Christchurch northwards on State Highway 1 (remember, not to be confused with State Highway 1 on the North Island) to Queen Charlotte Sound. The drive takes about 8 hours, so it's probably best to plan three days for this trip. After wondrous seascapes of the ocean on his right-hand side for almost the entire trip, he would get to experience the breath-taking glamour of the Sound. The ocean abounds with mussels in that area, and as a regular part of local fare, they're sure to be fresh, tasty, and cooked to perfection.

Back on the North Island, he would be well-advised to travel the 263 kilometres from Taronui Bay to Auckland, where he would see incredible views of historic fishing villages and natural beauty. The flatlands of this coastal area located on the very northernmost tip are a great place to view the quiet sunsets that can be found almost daily. This would also be another ideal place for him to observe some natural wildlife in action.
