It is a well known fact that hugely successful children’s author J.K. Rowling wrote the majority of her first Harry Potter books whilst living in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland and has existed for over 1000 years. If you’re looking for hotel breaks Scotland is certainly worth considering as a destination. With the magnificent Edinburgh Castle looming over the city’s cobbled streets, it’s not difficult to think of how the magical world of Harry Potter was inspired. Indeed, during the summer months you may often bump into a witch or wizard or two just strolling along the Royal Mile. That’s because summer means only one thing in Edinburgh – festival season. Thousands of shows and performers descend upon the city each year in a whirl of colour, drama, and excitement.

Several festival events are held in the city including the Edinburgh International Festival and the Royal Military Tattoo. But by far the biggest is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Held annually since 1947 when 8 theatre companies turned up uninvited to the official International festival, the fringe has since grown into the largest arts performance festival on the planet.

Many hotels in Perthshire get booked up months in advance of the festival, as tens of thousands of people prepare to visit Edinburgh and see what the festival’s shows have to offer. Comedy and theatre are the most common genres at the Fringe. However, with no selection committee, anybody can put on any type of show they like as long as a venue is found to host it in.

Many shows are free to attend. The Laughing Horse organises a programme of free shows every year, as does the promoter Peter Buckley Hill who has been running his own free fringe festival for over 16 years now. With so many types of performances on offer you are sure to find something you like
