During the 4th week, the blastocyst that will develop into a complete baby in the future has completed its six day journey right from the fallopian tube to the uterus. It burrows itself into the uterine lining and creates that connection that lasts for the coming eight months. The placenta is also developing and is sending out tiny hair like tendrils that wrap the abundant small blood vessels in the lining of the uterus. Normally the blood of the mother and the baby do not mix and exchange of oxygen and nutrients are possible due to the closeness of the blood vessels to the blood vessels of the placenta.

Changes in the baby:

Now the first trimester is on its way and this is the most crucial point of your baby’s development. At this stage the fetus is at a high risk of abnormalities as the baby’s brain, head, spinal cord, heart, muscles and tissues are all developing. Your baby is developing very quickly and it now consists of two layers called the hyboplast and the epiblast. The amnion sac and the yolk sac also develop during this week, which protects the embryo. The sac produces blood and this helps the embryo to get nourishment until the placenta takes over. During the 4th week of pregnancy, the baby’s vascular network is also growing and it helps to carry blood, oxygen and other nutrients from the mother to the baby through the umbilical cord. The baby is now about the size of an apple seed i.e. about .4mm long. The heart has formed and is beating and beginning to pump blood. The neural tube also forms during this time.

The breasts will become sore and increasingly tender and there may be a tingling sensation. Few women also develop an acute sense of smell that can be either good or bad. Foul smell is more likely to cause vomiting.
