Vaginal Dryness- An Overview

Vaginal dryness may happen to any woman. It is very usual problem in women after menopause. Mostly women or more than half women whose ages are in between 50 years to 60 years and have undergone to menopause, are affected by this problem.

Women may feel vaginal itching, feel uncomfortable during sex etc, are the symptoms that are felt because of menopause or use of contraceptives. Certain methods are there for its treatment like, lubricants, hormone replacement therapy, estrogen etc. In this article, we are going to draw a conclusion on the problem of vaginal dryness. 

Natural lubricant that is produced by the glands on the cervix retains vagina soft and moist. It keeps vagina clean and remove from dead cells because its nature is slightly acidic which helps to keep the place healthy along with its prevention from infection. Mostly women experience white discharge or discharge from vagina which is completely normal. During sexual stimulation, two glands on the face of vagina also known as Bartholin glands, produce additional moisture for sexual intercourse. However, according to a research study, a quarter of women whose ages are in between of 50-60 years, experience vaginal dryness during sex and 16% of them experience pain during sex. 

Vaginal dryness is a quite common problem but a treatable condition that many women experience in their lives at some point. This problem may occur at any age of life but this problem may take place for women who are going through or have experienced the menopause. It is suggested that do not neglect a dry vagina or feel ashamed to seek medical assistance if it is a problem for you. 

Symptoms of Vaginal Dryness: Some women are having symptoms of vaginal dryness only at certain time like pain during sex etc. while others women always feel the symptoms of vaginal dryness. Listed below are the symptoms associated with dry vagina. 

  • Vaginal dryness may cause in many cases such as, vaginal itching in both external and internal as well as vaginal irritation.
  • Discomfort and vaginal burning sensation.
  • Lack in libido.
  • Difficulty in sexual excitement as well as sexual intercourse.
  • Vaginal surface seems yellow and thin.
  • Contraction or shortening of vagina.
  • Difficulty in getting excited and reaching orgasm.
  • Urination more often than usual is one of the important symptoms of dry vagina.
  • Infection in urinary tract. 

Causes of Vaginal Dryness: Following incorporates the causes of vaginal dryness. 

  1. Menopause: Decrease in estrogen hormone levels during menopause may lead to continual vaginal dryness which is also known as vaginal atrophic. 
  1. Childbirth: Post birth to a baby, estrogen level decreases for the time being because of which vagina may become dry than normal. 
  1. Low arousal before sex: If woman does not experience aroused before having sex then her vagina may not produce natural lubricants and may feel discomfort during sex. 
  1. Use of contraceptives: However, it is uncommon but sometimes contraceptive pills like birth control pills and contraceptive injection may cause dryness in vagina. 
  1. Cancer Treatment: Pelvic region's radiotherapy, treatment of hormonal cancer and chemotherapy sometimes may lead to vaginal dryness. 
  1. Other Causes: These are as follows. 
  • Sometimes, vaginal dryness is also caused by diabetes where the immune system attacks on the glands that produce fluid.
  • Stress and anxiety are the essential causes of dry vagina as these may affect libido and vaginal lubrication.
  • Reduction in blood supply to vagina is one of the main causes of it.
  • Use of antihistamines which may help in managing cold and allergy symptoms by drying secretions and resulting as side effects may include vaginal dryness and difficulty in urinating.
  • Sometimes antidepressants may have the side effects related to sexual health incorporates, vaginal dryness, loss of libido and difficulty in reaching an orgasm.
