If that's the case there are several service centers around that offer discounts and generic pad that cost a fraction of the price. Sometimes these pads don't last as long as name-brand pads and they might be a little noisier but they will do the job and help you stay on budget. If your car requires make or model specific pads then you will probably have no choice but to go to the dealership to have them replaced.

When you do have brake repair then you need to make sure that the pads aren't just replaced and that's all. Your mechanic should check the entire system out to make sure that the lines are good and that you have plenty of fluid. Before you have to work performed you should ask about any warranties that the shop offers. This protects you in the event that your mechanic replaces the pads, and says the rest of the system is okay. If you still have noise or problems after the work is completed then they should fix the problem at no cost. If they do offer a warranty, get it in writing and verify how long it is good for.

Brake repair is no joke and shouldn't be put off for too long. If the old pads are left for a long period of time, you may do further damage to your car.
