The way we interact changes over time. You need to adjust to this, whilst also taking into account that some of your staff members are not going to change over time. This should only alter the interpersonal working relationship you have with your staff, and not how you manage them. You will also notice this sort of thing when dealing with staff members from different cultures.

Each generation is different

Their expectations, outlook and motivations are going to be different. This means you need to alter your management style to accommodate each. However, since each generation comes and goes, it means you need to keep "updating" (for want of a better word) your management skills.

Management rules change over time

Your company is going to change the rules on management as time goes by. The level of social interaction may change, such as some may now insist that you never raise your voice to a staff member. Alternatively, your company may become more strict and less forgiving; which will mean you will need to alter and adapt your management skills and techniques to accommodate the changes.

The law changes over time

Most of the unions now have little real power, which means conditions for workers are not likely to become better in the next few years. However, you should be aware of legislative changes, as they may affect the way your company does business or the way your staff are managed. You will need to improve your management skills to accommodate for this too.

Hold on to your position

You may already wish to improve your management skills because you want a promotion. However, you will also need to improve them if you simply wish to keep your job. The longer you keep your job then the more expensive you become. There are literally thousands of younger, hungrier and cheaper managers out there that are just itching to take your place. Only your experience and improved management skills are what stop your superiors from replacing you. Experience is worthless if you have not learned anything throughout your time.
