Environmental Permits and Air Pollution Update

The United States has almost 100 million tons of pollutants released into the air each year.  These pollutants make the air difficult to breath.  The ecosystems are also attached and plant and wildlife can be impacted drastically.  The most typically emissions contain sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, mercury, dioxin, benzene, and nitrogen dioxide.

Congress introduced Title V of the Clean Air Act Amendments in 1990.  The program streamlines how the federal, state, tribal, and local governments regulate air pollution by condensing the requirements into a single, comprehensive package.  The Operating Permit covers all aspects of the annual activities of a source of pollution.  The program is intended to enhance the understanding of the requirements and improve air quality.

This change was needed to improve understanding and control of air emissions.  There are approximately 22,000 sources of air pollution in the United States.  Each of these sources must work with one of the 113 state, territory, or local permitting authorities.  All of which must comply with the federal standards set.

An Environmental Consultant can aid in the process of obtaining the proper environmental permits for your company.  The application process has been streamlined, but may require a professional to ensure the process is correct the first time.  Any delays in the permitting process can lead to costly delays for a company working on tight timelines.  The facility would not be able to operate without the correct permits for the day to day work.

The revised system should help many companies better understand the requirements for the permit.  This system still requires a skilled eye to properly navigate and ensure accuracy.  Some facilities have hundreds of emission sources if there is a wide variety of sources and mixture of jobs to be done.  The air must be continually monitored to ensure the aggregate amount of toxins released is within the operating permit for the year.  Any overage could be costly to the company and for the surrounding communities that must contend with the elevated air pollution.  It is important that each individual operating permit be tailored to the specific need of that particular source to ensure an effective change for the surrounding environment.
