The HTC Desire HD is one of two brand new releases from the smartphone manufacturer. Released alongside the Desire Z, a QWERTY smartphone, it looks set to turn many heads, and is already causing a stir in the gadget and mobile community thanks to its impressive spec list.

Rather than being an improvement on the original HTC Desire, this is a completely new handset. In order to accommodate the large screen, the handset measures 123x 68x 11.8 mm, making it relatively slimline, and actually lightweight too, at 164 grams. The 4.3 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen utilises a pixel ration of 480x 800 to display up to 16M colours, with breathtaking clarity, detail and colour rendering. The screen also features an accelerometer sensor for auto rotate of the UI, a proximity sensor, and a touch sensitive control panel. The renowned HTC Sense UI makes another appearance on the HTC Desire HD. This highly customisable UI allows users to assign up to 7 fully customisable homescreen, which can be viewed in a thumbnail overview with a pinch of the screen.

 

1.5 GB of internal storage is provided as standard, with a 768 MB RAM. This is a generous level of internal storage; however the inclusion of a micro SD card slot allows users to gain up to 32GB of storage simply by installing a new memory card.

 

A fast internet surfing experience is provided via both HSDPA (at speeds of up to 7.2 Mbps) in areas covered by 3G, and by Wi-Fi when local wireless networks are available, with the latter providing the faster connection. Cellular networks are connected to via both GPRS and EDGE, whilst Bluetooth and micro USB connections allow users to connect to compatible hardware devices in order to carry out a range of different tasks.

 

An impressive 8 megapixel digital camera gives the HTC Desire HD a stake in the premium camera phone market as well. Packed with image manipulation features as well as software to simplify the task of taking them, the camera can also shoot video in 720p HD quality.

 

The high levels of customisation of the new Android 2.2 Froyo combined with the powerful 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor gives an ideal platform for customisation and expansion, especially when combined with access to the Android Market. This feature works in a similar way to the Apple AppStore, whereby users can browse and choose from thousands of apps to download, from many different categories.
