Mobile phone plans have changed dramatically over the last 37 years that they have been in existence. When they first became popular in 1973, many people used prepaid cell phones so that they would not be tied to a contract. It is speculated that this was because cell phones were not expected to be successful. But the idea of being accessible at any time is very attractive to most people.

The majority of people now sign a contract and have the peace of mind of being able to be reached at any time.
