Simultaneous Interpreting is Designed for International Conferences and the Media

Simultaneous interpreting is the most immediate and interactive process that can be used for bridging language divides. Because of its complexities and high demands, it is most frequently used for events such as high-level international conferences and significant business meetings.

Interpreting for live television program or interviews requires specialized skills and knowledge about actual interpreting processes. There are several requirements and qualifications that a simultaneous interpreter should have, such as a good quality of voice, proper diction, and regular rhythm.

International conferences such as the United Nations and North Atlantic Treaty Organization use several major languages such as Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Russian and Spanish. The Italian language is sometimes used during these international conferences; it is either used as an additional or substitute languages of one of these major languages. However, when it comes to television broadcast for languages such as Croatian, Polish, Latvian, Turkish, Thai, Tagalog and even Farsi is almost impossible to find professional conference interpreters for these somewhat uncommon languages. And that is because international conferences mainly focus on the languages that are commonly spoken by the majority of the people.

Many people donít actually realize the impact and significance of simultaneous interpretation in the society we live today. Without simultaneous interpretation, world issues will not be solved, or financial assets can be lost for international companies. These are only a few examples of the possible consequences of not utilizing simultaneous interpreting or not hiring a professional interpreter.

It is important to remember that simultaneous interpreting is not like direct text translation. Written translation is a process of studying the most accurate translation from one language to another. On the other hand, simultaneous interpreting is a fast-paced process of conveying the message from one language to another. However, linguists believe that the translation process is a safer way to produce the most accurate interpretation of a written document than simultaneous interpreting service.

As a matter of fact, aside from simultaneous interpreting and translation, there are still other ways in order to understand a language that you donít really speak. Studying and practicing to speak a foreign language can help an individual to understand the language. Another alternative to understanding understand a language is the opposite process of simultaneous interpreting, which is consecutive interpreting.

In consecutive interpreting, when the speaker pauses and finishes her or his speech, the interpreter renders a portion or the whole message for the entire speech in the target language. This may be a risky process for there are some possibilities of problems that may occur where the interpreter may keep on forgetting some part of the speech.
