Recently announced, and due for release in the third quarter of 2010 the Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G is an interesting newcomer to the manufacturer’s range. The handset provides very good mid range features including a 3.15 mega pixel digital camera, half a QWERTY keyboard and a versatile internal media player.

The handset measures 108x 50x 13.3mm and only weighs 93.6 g.  Its compact dimensions and relatively lightweight make it both pocket friendly and a pleasure to hold and use on the move.  Rather than utilises from quite a keyboard as blackberry often does,The Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G Incorporates Effective Functionality Articles a half keyboard is instead included.

The internal memory within the 9100 Pearl 3G is 256 MB, allowing storage for a decent number of files ranging from music tracks, video clips and photos.  A micro SD slot is also included with a pre-installed 2 GB memory card.  This can be increased dramatically, however, by installing a larger memory card of up to 32 GB.  The ever popular Photocall feature is included in the handsets phonebook which allows a photo to be assigned to each contact and is then displayed on screen whenever that person calls.

Blackberry has included a decent mid range 3.15 mega pixel digital camera which comes with both Autofocus and led flash.  These simplify the task of taking good quality photos.  The camera can also shoot video as an alternative method of image capture.

Class 10 versions of both GPRS and EDGE provide the 9100 Pearl 3G with its main method of staying connected to cellular networks in areas with little or no 3G coverage.  In areas covered by 3G, a HSDPA connection provides access to the Internet at speeds of up to 3.6 mega bytes per second (alongside an HSUPA connection).  Wi-Fi Technology is included in order to provide a faster connection whenever near to a wireless Internet router.  Both Bluetooth and micro USB connections allow the handset to connect to other compatible hardware devices such as other phones and computers.  This allows a number of different tasks to be carried out, ranging from sharing contact info to by swapping music tracks or video clips.

A number of impressive features and to the everyday functionality of the handset.  The internal media player supports file formats such as MP3 and MP4, along with a number of other music and video file types.  An organiser and voice memo recorder provide valuable efficiency tools and a document editor is sure to prove useful to business users when out of the office.

The TFT screen utilises a pixel layout of 360x 400 pixels to display up to 256K colours for decent display of on screen images.  A touch sensitive optical trackpad provides the means to navigate the Blackberry OS user interface.

Whilst the Blackberry 9100 Pearl 3G may lack some of the functionality of others from the manufacturer, it provides great features for those who value efficiency over aesthetics.  This is a fine example of Blackberry doing what it does best, and is sure to win new fans for the manufacturer.
