The assignments of graphic design usually include processing of pictures,Bitmap And Outline Fonts Articles theme choice and picking up suitable colors to establish the background or painting some objects. However, it is also appropriate to remind of text objects, which often become a point of design and fitting the right font, especially if it is postcards, visiting cards, signboards or announcement posters, etc.
To provide a definition, font is a special file, which consists of a set of textual and numeric characters of a certain size, style, and typeface. In their software presentation, the entire range of fonts is divided into two groups: bitmap and outline, which in turn are divided into monospaced and proportional types. The first computer fonts looked like a text made on typing machine, but the turnover occurred in 1984 significantly changed the appearance of computer fonts. In particular, this year the Apple Company has introduced the first Macintosh with a new fonts’ description. The computer typing industry started since Hewlett-Packard Company announced of LaserJet printer production.
It is appropriate to define the features of both font types. Bitmap fonts are presented with raster form of depiction, where the image of a character is made up of small dots - pixels. In terms of rapid output to the screen and fast redraw raster fonts has effectively lost its relevance for computer graphics designers to date. One of the top reasons of such neglect was that fonts of this class are almost not suitable for scaling. Nevertheless, they are still used in operating systems as office fonts (Courier, Symbol, Small Fonts, MS Serif, MS Sans Serif, etc.) with the extension fon. In the folder Fonts bitmap fonts will be marked with letter «A».
Outline fonts are of vector description, where the image of letters, numbers, signs and symbols is seen as a mathematical formula. This group is easily scalable and, moreover, without any distortion and visible roughening. But still it is worth taking into account the fact that when small forms of characters are performed the effect of aliasing may be present (coarsening of the circuit). This is due to the fact that a mathematical model of the certain sign recalculation will present a quantitative lack of pixels to build. This group will be presented in three main formats -True 1, True Type, Open Type.
There are different editors, which deal with these types of fonts. Adobe Photoshop is better to use while working with bitmap computer fonts, and CorelDraw is good for outline fonts.
