How to Make the User Read Your Page?

Every web content writer asks this question. Some of them already know the answer, some still write at random.  They write with no grammar and spelling mistakes and the content seems to be informative. But still   the users don’t stay on their site long.  What’s the problem then? Apart from the quality of the contents the writer should be able to present information drawing the user’s attention to the major elements of the story on the web page. Creating web texts follow three simple rules…

The research showed that reading the information on the computer screen is 25% slower than reading of the printed text (http://lists.webjunction.org/libweb).  Because of the inconvenience people avoid reading large electronic texts. Don’t be afraid to cut your own text. Most authors revel in their creations so much that they are ready to shut their eyes to unnecessary empty words.  If you prepare your text for the web, find and eliminate redundant words without any regret about it. The readers of the web pages are unlikely to read the whole text.  Firstly, because it is difficult for them to perceive the words from the screen.  Secondly, looking through the web materials most of them get somewhat impatient. That is why they limit to skimming the material, paying their attention only at important for them key words, phrases and paragraphs and ignoring those of no interest to them. Skimming is typical for web that is why you should take it into account and follow these tips.

Divide your articles into separate parts with headlines of two or even three different levels. Headlines must reflect the content of the paragraph completely. Reading the headline the user should have a clear idea of what this page is about without reading the main text (e.g. How to Answer Your Scholarship Essay Question) To draw the reader’s attention to the particular sections of the text, use bulleted lists or other formatting elements. You can distribute the information among several web pages, connected with each other by hyper links.  This way you will abridge the text with no detriment to its content. Every separate page can be short but at the same time the whole hyperspace makes out considerable amount of data. You can transfer long and detailed descriptions to secondary pages, reachable with the help of hyper links. Do not use hyper text for structuring long passage into separate pages. Downloading several pages slows down the reading process and makes printing troublesome. The correct hypertext structure should not include single logical consequence like view p. 2. Instead divide the information into logical sectionsFeature Articles, each of them must be devoted to explanation of a separate point.  With all this you should give the user freedom of choosing the information he/ she wants to view: whether they choose to read about “The Most Hamlet Essay Question” or something more interesting.
