In the earlier stages of the medieval period men and women were medieval costumes that were not very different. Later on, medieval costumes evolved with distinctive appearance and looks for women’s clothing and for men’s clothing.  While the middle class and the lower class wore shapeless and colorless clothing made from rough fabrics, the rich and the royal wore expensive, splendid dresses in various hues, encrusted with brilliant gemstones. Today’s costumes for renaissance festivals or medieval festivals draw inspiration from clothing worn by royalty and by the common class. If you are considering attending a renaissance festival clad in medieval dresses, you can dress up as a peasant, a knight, an aristocrat, a musketeer, a pirate or royalty.
A medieval costume for a peasant is the simplest comprising cotton shirt, preferably a pirate shirt, stockings, tunic over the shirt tied with a sash or rope along with matching hat made of clothes and appropriate boots. A knight’s medieval dress is more elaborate with a tunic, pants, boots and headpiece, cowl, belt and a sword. An aristocrat’s dress is higher up the scale with a jacket or a surcoat over the tunic, very elaborate, made of finest shimmering satin or silk, plenty of ruffles and adorned by a belt, sword and boots. For a royal look in a medieval dress, purple could be the colour of choice for the dress with plenty of lace, ruffles, embellishments and adornments, topped by a cape and a crown to match. Pirates abounded in those times and if you attend a renaissance party dressed up in a renaissance festival with an eye patch, a belt across your chest, pants, folded down knee length boots, hat and bandanna, you definitely acquire a stylish and impressive air in that array of medieval clothing.
A renaissance festival is just the thing for women to dress up in dazzling medieval clothing and be the center of attention. This is when you can really let go, decking yourself out in stylish full length multi-hued robes, with jewels, with a small crown, jewellery to match and long hair falling down your shoulders.  Men can be equally dazzling and present a splendid front with pirate dresses and pirate boots to match. Generally speaking dresses based on the designs prevalent between the 14th and 15th century is popular for renaissance parties.
