The NutriMill – tips for care and use

So you have a Nutrimill Wheat Grinder, now what? This article has some tips on caring for your new toy!

The Nutrimill Grain Mill is hands down the best mill for the money. It is easy to use and time efficient for the fresh flour enthusiast. From the novice to the experienced home mill user, there will always be some idiosyncrasies to using any new small appliance, no matter how simple the L'Equip Nutrimill is to operate. Here are a few tips on use, care and cleaning of a Nutrimill Grain Grinder.

Cleaning – Dry dusting is best to clean the entire Nutri Mill on a regular basis. The shoot and the area above the hopper should be dry dusted before or after each use.

It may be tempting to put the hopper in the dishwasher when cleaning the Nutri Mill. I suggest that this not be done. Depending upon the heat of the water and/or the drying coils in the dishwasher the hopper or lid could warp. Although they are both very durable, warping will keep the seal from working properly. The Nutrimill can simply be wiped off with a dry rag or paper towel, most of the time. It does not need soap and water every time it’s cleaned. I have found that the interior cup and the small round black filters can usually be put in the dishwasher with out any trouble.

After the lid and hopper have been washed with warm soapy water and are completely dry, it is normal for them to be more difficult to twist together again. This small inconvenience is fixed by dusting the lid’s black seal with a light dusting of flour.

Care – Let’s just say someone wanted to help clean up and hopper of the Nutri Mill has already gone through the dishwasher and the seal is now not working as well as it did before. Before giving up, there is one thing to try. The seal first needs to be dusted with flour as normal after its usual washing and then twisted onto the hopper; do not put the mesh filter or inside cup on as if milling. The oven needs to preheat to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Take the closed container and place on a towel that is also on a cookie or baking sheet. Make the bottom of the hopper sits level on the baking sheet. Take another towel or hot pad on top and place it on top of the closed hopper lid. Place an oven proof weighty item to add pressure until you see that there is no space left open around the seal. This whole stack of items is placed in the oven. Immediately turn the oven OFF. Ignore and don’t adjust until the oven is completely cooled. Within the next few times of milling, the seal should be back to working order.

Using – The Nutrimill has a noticeable change in ‘pitch’ when it is finished milling. I like to dial it down as soon as I hear that pitch change and immediately unplug the NutriMill. By unplugging it, I make sure that any vibrations do not inadvertently turn the dial back to the ‘on’ position. This is not a big problem, simply a nuisance that I’ve figured out how to avoid.

First, read and follow the NutriMill manual thoroughly. Next I would suggest to always be extra sure the hopper is pushed back to the “YES” marker on the bottom of the tray when using it. For everyone from the first timer to the experienced mill user, this oversight will result in an amazing cloud of flour fluffing through the kitchen; I did this when first milling and have done it since when not paying attention!
