Types of Green Tea in China
There are literally countless versions of green tea available. Although these are all different types of green tea, all of these different types share one common characteristic.
They all come from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. The different types of green tea emerge due to differing locations on where the tea is grown, slight changes in how the tea is cultivated, the differing climate in locations and a whole host of other factors. Dragon Well Tea (Long Jing)
Dragon Well (Long Jing) is China’s best-loved Green Tea. Characterized by flat, spear-shaped leaves, which are picked in pairs, true Long Jing is grown only around Hangzhou in Zhejiang Province. It is widely faked in China so always choose a reputable supplier.
This is one of the most popular types of chinese green teas. This tea is still primarily grown in the Zhejian Province of China, although plantations for this tea are spreading elsewhere in China. One of the characteristics of this tea is that, once processed, the tea looks like tiny pellets. These pellets open up during the brewing process.
Anji Bai Cha is a high quality Green Tea made from the same varietal of ‘Big White’ tea plant as Yin Zhen. Oxidation is stopped by firing to give a more pronounced depth of flavour to the young leaves, which are arrow shaped and feathery in appearance.
Mao Jian (downy tip) is a high quality Green tea produced in Xinyang, Henan Province. It is characterized by small slightly downy sea-green coloured leaves with silver tips. The light yellow liquor is deliciously sweet and nutty.
Yun Wu tea (cloud mist) is one famous green tea in China. Yun Wu translates as "cloud and mist". It describes the climate in mountainous areas with high humidity what leads to clouds and mist. Both ideal conditions for high quality tea as it shields the tea leaves from extensive sunlight.
It is one of China's famous green teas, is noted for its long-lasting floral aroma and fresh, sweet taste. Grown at an elevation of over 800 meters, Huang Shan Maofeng is handpicked from tea trees of the Yellow Mountains.
