Winter is officially here, but it is not too late to winterize your pool. There are many steps to successful winterizing of a pool, including checking water levels and making sure the chemicals are correct. An in-ground winter pool cover is the final step to closing your pool for the winter.

Many people are unsure of what type of in-ground winter pool cover to get, since there are so many kinds. There are vinyl and mesh covers and there are also accessories that go with them. Most in-ground winter pool covers need a cover pump, leaf net and water bags. You may need all of these items in addition to an in-ground winter pool cover to close your pool for the winter successfully.

An in-ground winter pool cover made out of mesh will keep most debris out of your pool. If there are relatively mild winters where you live, this may be the cover for you. You can save money on a leaf net and a cover pump since you will not need either of these items if you have a mesh in-ground winter pool cover. Keep in mind the water may need to be drained if you have a lot of rain in your area to keep the water away from the filter

An in-ground winter pool cover made from vinyl will keep all debris and sunlight out of your pool if it is used in combination with a cover pump and secured tightly with water bags. If you live in a region prone to hard freezes, or you wish your cover to double as a safety cover, then this is the cover for you. You will definitely need a cover pump with this type of cover, or else all of the water will collect on the cover and drag the cover down and ruin it. With a vinyl in-ground winter pool cover no sunlight will get in the pool, so there should be no algae in the spring when you re-open your pool. A leaf net is helpful or else you will have to get off all of the heavy, decaying leaves before you remove the cover, or else all of those leaves will fall right in your pool.

Maintaining a pool is a year-round job. If you winterize your pool correctly with an in-ground winter pool cover, you can really minimize the amount of work you have to do in the winter and also the spring.
