I get approached by a lot of clients who have websites that look great but are not getting very many visitors. One of the first steps in increasing the number of visitors is to consider link popularity.

Search engine optimization involves trying to get a website to the top of the search engine rankings for a particular search,Have You Thought About Link Popularity? Articles or number of searches, that are relevant to the site. The aim is to increase the number of visitors to your website, increasing the numbers of potential customers and sales.

There are a number of steps to successfully optimizing any site and many people have heard of the importance of link popularity as part of the process. It is indeed correct that link popularity can be vital when optimizing a website - the main problem is that many website owners get their link building campaigns completely wrong.

I've seen countless sites that have an enormous number of inbound links and yet are doing very poorly when it comes to their search engine rankings.

The main problem is often that, when it comes to inbound links, people often look to quantity rather than quantity. The important point to consider when thinking about link popularity is that one link from a great website is better than 100 trashy links.

So, what do I mean by a 'good' website? Not all websites are made equal - a good website for you to get a link from will ideally be established in the same topic area as your own website. It's important that you get links from relevant sites, rather than any old link.

When it comes to getting inbound links, there's no point trying to get numerous links from other sites that have no content relating to your own site - if anything, such a plan will only lead to your own website being penalised.

If you already know your topic area well then you are probably already aware of the established sites that are well respected. These are the sites that you should be approaching for inbound links.

If you're unsure of which sites to target then you'll need to start researching - simply entering your target keyword terms on Google, Yahoo or MSN is a great way to see which other sites are established in your sector.

Link popularity is important and it's vital that it's done correctly.
