Photo editing software can be very expensive. Photoshop has still got the corner of the market and has even entered into vernacular- ‘shopped’, “That photo of her is so shopped!”

However there are free to use photo editing software available online.  They may not be as versatile or technical as Adobe,Photo editing software Articles Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro, but hey! They’re free!  Here is two of the best.

GIMP, the GNU Image Manipulation Program, was launched in 1996, and since then it has been updated regularly.  It is widely regarded as the most powerful free photo editing software that you're likely to find anywhere.  It has all the features that you expect from photo editing software; correct colours, enhance contrast etc.  There is the facility to sharpen or blur an image, fix the perspective, and red-eye removal.  You can add lighting effects, or turn a photo into an oil painting, and even create an animation.  It may take you a while to familiarise and learn how to get the best out of GIMP, but it is worth the effort.  There is no free photo editing software that can compete with the power that GIMP has got.

Paint.NET has plenty of good points, but is still behind GIMP in terms of sheer power.  Its strong point is its image editing.  Again, it has all the standard you would expect.  Paint.NET’s interface is intuitive and uncomplicated which makes it very easy to use.  Perhaps this would be a better choice for those complete beginners who just want to edit their home photos.
