Family Friendly Restaurants in Lanzarote

In my experience, one of the most stressful aspects of family holidays is finding food and restaurants that the kids can enjoy. Children, and particularly younger ones, can be very fussy about what they eat, so taking them to a country with an alternative cuisine can be an issue. Not just this, but trying to find family friendly establishments which have a pleasant atmosphere and serve good food can also be tricky without prior research.

For families headed to the Canary Island of Lanzarote (an excellent destination for a family holiday), this is all the information you need about eating on the island and where the best eateries are.

The Cuisine of the Canary Islands

The food of the Canary Islands, including Lanzarote, is influenced by a few different cultures. Specifically, it is influenced by the aboriginal inhabitants, Latin American cooking and some African influences.

Pork, chicken, rabbit and goat are all very common on the island, as is fish, with the waters around the island being rich with seafood. Meat or seafood is then often part of a stew, or served with a Canary Island specialty known as papas. This is potatoes mashed with a sauce which combines paprika, garlic, cumin and white vinegar. Locally grown produce is often incorporated into meals, with bananas, avocados, papayas and tomatoes all being grown on the island.

The Canary Islands also have delicious desserts which anyone with a sweet tooth is sure to love - especially the kids. These dishes largely revolve around cane sugar, honey, anise, almonds and palm syrup.

There are many great local meals to try, but I would recommend costillas con pina (ribs with corn cob), sancocho (salted fish, sweet potato and vegetable stew) and pucherocanario (a soup with a variety of meats, potatoes and vegetables).

This is what you can expect of the cuisine in Lanzarote, but the majority of resorts and eateries will provide a full range of international dishes. This is particularly true of British grub, so keeping your kids content should be simple when you find the best family-friendly joints (although I would encourage them to try some of the local dishes too).

The Best Family-Friendly Restaurants in Lanzarote

• La Cantina

Owned by an English couple with two children of their own, Teguise’s La Cantina is a wonderful diner and very family-friendly. They serve simple dishes which rely heavily on the local cuisine, with food for all tastes available and a great atmosphere.

• Almacén de la Sal

Perfectly situated next to the seafront in Playa Blanca, Almacén de la Sal has a varied and extensive menu which should make it easy for everyone to find something they like. It is also a charming restaurant that occasionally has a live piano player, which can be great fun.

• Meson La Frontera

Located in the pretty town of Haria, Meson La Frontera has a play area to keep the little ones entertained, plus a menu which has both simple and fancy options centred on local produce.

• Casa Museo del Campesino

A terrific tapas eatery found just inland from Arrecife, Casa Museo del Campesino is a fantastic place to stop off for lunch where you can enjoy Spanish-style fast food in a friendly and welcoming establishment.
