Every culture has a unique dress that represents their culture and forms a huge part of their heritage. It is very easy to identify the cultural background of a person if they seen wearing their traditional dress anywhere in the world. There are many dress styles, which although belongs to a specific culture, are now becoming a popular trend all around. One such traditional dress which is making waves in the fashion world everywhere is Salwar Kameez.

The salwar kameez is the traditional dress worn by women in many South Asian countries such as Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and many more. The Salwar is a loose trouser also referred to as pajamas. The salwar has a narrow fitting around the angle and is wide around the top. The Kameez is a long tunic with slits on the two sides to enhance the shape and provide freedom of movement to the person who wears it. The woman completes this attire by draping a matching stole/scarf around the neck. This stole is referred to as dupatta or chunni. The basic design of the traditional Salwar kameez has remained same over the centuries, but with changing times, this traditional dress has been modified and altered into many different styles.

Historical evidence indicates that Salwar kameez was initially worn by Turko-Iranian people residing in Central Asian regions. The Turko-Iranian tribes converted to Islam and established their rule over local farmers. Hence, Salwar kameez is also known as the traditional dress of many Islamic countries. But fashion does not see religion or culture that is why it is worn by many women who are not Muslim around the world for over a century now. Salwar Kameez is also known as a 'Punjabi Suit' in United Kingdom and Canada.
