The Exchange of Gifts at Christmas

Christmas falls on the 25th of December and the festival is an important part of Christian traditions as it marks the day of Jesus’ birth to the Virgin Mary in Bethlehem 2000 years ago. Christmas has been celebrated throughout the ages as the birthday of the lord Jesus. Christmas celebrations last for 5 days until the start of the New Year. Carol singing, midnight church services, plum cakes and turkey dinners are important features of Christmas celebrations.

The tradition of Christmas trees is also an integral and popular part of the festivities. The usage of trees in celebrations is of pagan origins but Christianity has integrated it fully to Christmas and now it is almost impossible to disassociate Christmas trees from the traditions. For Christmas, people would erect trees in their homes and courtyards and decorate various ornaments such as wreaths, garlands, or tinsel and candy canes. People would often put a figure of an angel or a star on top of the tree in representation the archangel Gabriel or the Star of Bethlehem.

Exchange of gifts is a significant feature of the festival and the tradition of gifts is considered to be a reminder of the presents given by the three Wise Men to Jesus at his birth. People all over the world generally give presents to their family, friends, relatives and other loved ones. Parents usually take considerable care in procuring the best Christmas gifts for kids as little children are most enthusiastic of the gifts. They would write a list of the gifts they want in advance of the festival and address it to Santa Claus or Father Christmas for which they will wait in eager anticipation the whole time. The tradition of Christmas gifts is an important part of the festivities as it signifies love, cheer and goodwill.
