Once you buy coffee online and get your package in the mail, one of the first things you probably want to do is give it a try either right then or first thing the next morning. Using a French press is one of the best ways to make your coffee at home, but you need to do it right.

First, start by grinding your beans to a coarse grind. Typically, buying bags of already ground coffee will leave you with a grind that is too fine. It is best to buy whole bean so you can grind it yourself coarsely (similar to the size of bread crumbs). It needs to be coarse because the water for the French press will be sitting around with the grounds for a while. When you have your ground coffee, add 50-60 grams of grounds to the French press.

Next, heat up your water. Around 201 degrees is best. You want it just under boiling. If you don’t have an electric kettle, heat water until it boils and then take it off the heat to rest for around 30 seconds. When you have your coffee ready, pour it on top of the grounds, filling the French press halfway. Wait 30 to 60 seconds.

Now it’s time to break up the floating grounds and stir them in well with the water. Add more water near to the top of the French press. Put the lid on and wait around 3 to 4 minutes.

After the time is up, plunge the coffee with the lid to press the attached filter down.

And there you have it! Fresh coffee that’ll offer something a little extra than regular drip. Enjoy the more nuanced flavor profiles and carry the carafe around with you. You’ll want more!
