In an ironic twist of fate, it seems that antivirus software can sometimes cause more harm than the very viruses they are designed to protect against. As these programs become increasingly complex, they begin to resemble the malicious software they are supposed to combat. This article will explore some of the issues encountered with popular antivirus programs, and offer some potential solutions.

The Downside of Norton Crash Guard

The first issue I encountered was with Symantec's Norton Crash Guard. This software,The Pitfalls of Antivirus Software: A Cautionary Tale Articles designed to protect my brother's new Compaq computer, ended up causing more problems than it solved. Instead of simply shutting down the problematic program, Crash Guard would force the entire computer to crash. On other computers, the software significantly slowed down the system to the point where it had to be uninstalled.

Norton AntiVirus: A Barrier to Internet Access

Upon installing Norton AntiVirus, I found myself unable to access the internet. After contacting our internet service provider and Eudora, it was discovered that the program was attempting to route all emails through their server for virus checks. This required a reset of preferences to align with the internet service provider. I was not alone in this issue; a colleague was offline for nearly 12 hours due to Norton AntiVirus.

Norton Systemworks: A System Slowdown

My father recently had his computer serviced due to some issues. The technician recommended uninstalling Norton Systemworks' computer monitor, claiming it was redundant and slowed down the computer by 10%. This advice proved to be sound, as the computers ran noticeably faster without it.

Internet Explorer Incompatibility

For over a year, I struggled with Internet Explorer (IE) not working. This issue began around the same time I installed Netscape 4.7. Despite numerous attempts at uninstalling and reinstalling both programs, the problem persisted. Eventually, I discovered that my antivirus program, Aladdin's E-Safe Desktop, was causing the issue. After uninstalling the program, IE began working again.

The McAfee Dilemma

While McAfee has been functioning well on my computer for the past week, I've heard numerous horror stories from others. In the past, I've also had issues with updates.

Hope for Better Antivirus Solutions

In a survey of my subscribers, Trend Software's PC-Cillan emerged as the top antivirus solution. It can be downloaded from Trend's website. Another recommended solution is the free AVG anti-virus, available from Grisoft's website. Good luck in your quest for reliable antivirus protection!
