You look at the E61, and you think smart phone it looks the part with its metallic finish and wide screen. This is Nokias move to take on the Blackberry devices, and play them at there own game. When does a smart phone stops being a smart phone and become a pda?, I think the E61 is the point that that happens. For a long time the blackberry from research in motion has been the businessman's brand, a no nonsense communication tool, unless you sported the latest blackberry you couldn't actually class your self as a businessman or woman, could you?

Then came along the Nokia E61 with its sleek design and QWERTY keyboard,Nokia E61 is it a smart phone or what Articles is it the beginning of the end of the blackberry domination of  the business communications market.

The E61 is a pocket computer with a QVGA screen at 320x240 it comes pre loaded with 52 applications. When you get the E61 started for the first time after inserting a new SIM it determines what  network your on  and install the correct data connection codes. If you bought yours through one of the main network providers such as Vodafone of T-mobile this would have been done for you. The E61's operating system is Nokia's  very own Series 60 or just known as the  S60 front-end with the Symbian OS 9.1 backend  there are  an assortment of PIM and messaging applications. These are together with Nokia's new browser and a set of office applications: Document, Sheet, Presentation, and Screen Export, the screen export is used to control a plug-in projector connection module.

The Push email client is not installed straight out of the box but you can visit the Nokia Business Software site and choose which wireless email service you need, Visto, Good, Blackberry, ActiveSync or Seven,  now all you need to do is to connect to your server.  Download and install the ActiveSync client and bobs your uncle your up and running in a few minutes. If you are on a hosted exchange server like myself you should have all your email, contacts, and calendar synced to your server. now that's true "push" email and can specify what times you want your email to arrive instantly and what times, its not so important.

All in all the Nokia E61 is a fantastic addition to any businessman or woman's work toys it has a long list of applications pre installed and because its symbian you can download more programs from the internet. The email is easy to use combined with the QWERTY keyboard makes this a strong alternative to the blackberry and other Pda's / smart phones. The screen is large and clear and internet surfing is more comfortable then on most phones. Now would I recommend the N61 and the answer has to be a strong yes, the only down point is the shape; its not something you can put in your back pocket and forget about, If you can live with the size then this is a great smart phone
