I get asked this question quite regularly out in the field and the truth is it varies from household to household.

I have always been a fan of tub or cylinder vacuum cleaners,Upright vacuum cleaners or cylinder vacuums, what is better? Articles to me its more logical, it makes more sense to move around the house holding only the weight of the hose, and letting the floor deal with the actual machine weight. For years I truly believed that uprights were dated and there was no point in pushing the entire device around.

Cylinder vacuum cleaners also tend to on average have more suction power due to the construction of the main housing, obviously this factor varies, its like asking how fast is a car but pound for pound there tends to be better suction in a tub. Another factor is the amount of force you can use to push down on when cleaning carpets. I like to scrub away on dirtier patches, the uprights have a limited amount of force you can administer down into the carpet, all these factors made sense to me to keep a tub.

I WAS COMPLETELY WRONG!

After some reluctance I moved over to a well know British brand of uprights, made a purchase from a local retailer and took it home to test. I was amazed at the amount of dirt I picked up with one of these. My carpets at home were cleaned the week before but when I moved over sections in the lounge area to test out the functionality of the machine I was astounded at the amount of flush and debris being sucked into the see through bagless chamber. Not stopping I moved around the whole house. It was effortless as the upright had wheels which aided the movement. By the time I completed my walk around a third of the chamber was filled with fluff.

I've attributed the increased cleaning power on uprights to the rotating bristles at the bottom which agitate the carpet pile, they gently beat and pulse through the area drawing dirt up to the surface which the vacuum sucks up instantly.

I've since moved onto commercial more effective carpet cleaners, that funny enough actually cost less than the traditional household names, but one thing is clear, the answer to this question is:

With out a shadow of doubt, Uprights are more efficient and effective at cleaning carpets than their cylinder cousins.
