Many developed and developing countries are encouraging the use of LEDs to save energy and costs. The major reason behind the increasing installation of LED bulbs is the longevity of LEDs, around 100,000 hours of light, as compared to CFL with 8000 to 10,000 hours and incandescent bulbs with 1000 hours lifespan.

An LED is a semiconductor device made up of a diode and anode. The type of diode used depends on the applications. A diode produces light when a current passes through it. A diode emits light energy, which is converted into electricity by the semiconductor oxide layer. A diode has an open circuit that can be broken down into an "on/off" state. This allows the electrical current to pass through it into a diode plate. LEDs are used in many applications and various types of lighting. There are three common types of LEDs such as blue, green, and red. They are manufactured with different properties for different applications. 

LEDs offer numerous advantages, such as no presence of UV rays, more resistant to thermal shock and vibrations, less radiated heat, high luminous intensity, high switching speed, eco-friendly, flexibility in design, low temperature, high energy efficiency, longer lifespan, and small chip size and low cost. However, it has some drawbacks too, such as theoretical overall efficiency is achieved only in special cool or pulsed conditions, sensitivity to damages by excess voltage and/or excess current, and ambient temperature dependence of radiant output power and wavelength of the LED. LEDs can be used in remote controls, non-visual applications, toys & medical applications, data displaying boards, traffic light Indicators, signs, & signals, motor vehicles & bicycle lights, etc.

Earlier, LEDs were limited to residential and some parts of the commercial segment. However, stringent environmental policies, quality of lighting, and growing concerns related to energy efficiency have increased LED installations. Over the years, LEDs have replaced traditional lighting. Moreover, the demand for LED services is increasing rapidly due to concepts such as smart homes, smart cities, and smart street lighting. There are a large number of LEDs available in the market with different shapes & sizes, colors, and light output intensities. Many colored emission LEDs are being manufactured nowadays and they are available in many packages (two to three LEDs within a single package).
