The Tummy Tuck and Its Benefits

The tummy tuck is another term for an abdominoplasty. The procedure falls under plastic surgery and can be easy or difficult, depending on the type of operation the doctor and the patient has agreed on. There are several techniques that surgeons use to implement an abdominoplasty. There is a full procedure, a mini operation and a standard one. There are actually other procedures that may use the endoscopic method as well as an extended one where most of the lower back is included. 

The full or extended procedure entails making an incision that extends from one hip to another. That means that the incision starts from the left hip and goes to the right hip. In some cases, the lower may be included in the procedure. The operation that follows cuts away excess tissue and skin. This type of tummy tuck is sometimes compared to a cesarean section because of the extent of the incision done to the patient. The skin is then folded up and stitched together to cover up the abdomen. The point of the operation is to cut out the loose skin rather than to eliminate the fat in the area.

The standard form of this operation is one that requires the surgeon to make an incision in a straight line between the hips. Both the full and the mini tummy tuck can be accompanied by a little bit of liposuction to accommodate the patient's request for a taut abdomen. Repositioning of the belly button may be necessary, the same with the full procedure.

This operation is great for individuals who have lost some weight and have just a little bit of skin hanging loose in the abdomen. Some surgeons call it a scarless abdominoplasty due to the fact that the incision is rather small compared to both procedures explained above. Due to the minimal incision to be made, the patient's belly button often does not need to be repositioned. 

Pros and Cons

The benefits of having any of the three operations mentioned above include having a smooth and lean abdomen to accompany the smooth and lean physique. Many individuals lose a lot of weight but still have a pouch hanging in their tummies. This can be disconcerting in the fact that stomach fat is one of the most difficult to lose. The tummy tuck also helps the individual lose some more weight because the excess skin and tissue that are removed from the abdominal area comprises several pounds of weight as well. Another advantage of this operation is the boost of self confidence and self esteem that usually goes with looking physically fit and more attractive. 

The disadvantages of the tummy tuck include the risks of complications stemming from the operation itself and the possible side effects that come after. Adverse reactions to the medications applied during and after the abdominoplasty can contribute to complications for the patient. Scarring is also another problem that often comes with either the full or the standard surgery. Swelling and bruising often occurs but these are easily treated and part of the normal occurrence after the operation.
