In America,Quality Flatware for The Kitchen Articles flatware or silverware are interchangeable phrases for tableware applied for cooking, serving and eating meals. Originally these tableware were made from silver, but always had a bit of other metal in them. Today most are manufactured from stainless steel. Usually they are sold in sets of four to eight or larger. Each set includes dinner forks, salad/dessert forks, teaspoons, soup spoons, knives and include serving utensils such as a meat fork and different serving spoons.

Many forms have evolved from the basic fork, knife and spoon. Now there is a spork which is a blending of a spoon and fork. This is quite useful for serving sliced meat and veggies. A spife is half spoon and knife. This is ideal for slicing meat and serving vegetables. A knork that mixes a knife and fork helps one when cutting meat or bread and moving it to a serving plate. Finally, a sporf is a blend of a knife, fork and spoon. This can be used for any kind of food service.
Some homes have at least two sets of silverware. One is for routine family use and the other set is used for special events such as holidays, birthdays and other gatherings. Different times this special set is produced from silver and needs polishing to keep up its appearance.

Of course, plastic tools have branched out which are disposable. These are perfect for picnics, barbecues and parties. They are somewhat inexpensive and can be discarded after use. Some offices have plastic tableware for their employees use. These plastic tools are very frequently given when ordering take out food as well.
