How to Create a Modern Living Room Design

Decorating your living room with a modern flair is really quite simple. In fact, it is probably one of the easiest types of interior design to create. Since it is based on minimalism, modern design is something that even someone who has no experience with decorating can create – and make it look as if the space was decorated by a professional.

Start with your palette

The first step in creating a modern living room design is to choose your color palette. A monochromatic scheme is the way to go in this department. Typically, neutral colors and shades are used in this design, like black and white, or beige and cream; however, if you want your living room to be a little more vibrant, you can certainly do so. If you like the color red, for instance, you can create a red color scheme that is monochromatic. To do so, just select a few different shades of red. For instance, you can use a dark shade on the lower portion of the walls, a lighter shade on the upper portion, and incorporate other shades of red in the textiles, the furnishings and the decorative accents. You could do the same with blue, green, yellow or any other color that you like.

Simple Furnishings

The furnishings in a contemporary living room should be simple. Ornate furnishings, such as tables that feature carved legs, or sofas that have curved backs and busy fabric won’t work in this type of living room. Instead, pick pieces that have straight backs and legs, and that are covered with plain fabric. In the a red living room, for instance, a straight-backed sofa with no arms, steel legs and crushed red velvet fabric would work perfectly. A coffee and side table with iron or steel legs and glass tops will also work great in this space.

Accessories

To tie your living room design together, you’ll want to bring in decorative accents. This is where you can bring in some real visual interest. Think large paintings that feature bold colors (that coordinate with your monochromatic color scheme, of course) and geometrical designs, or a reprint of one of Andy Warhol’s famed modern paintings.

On the sofa, place throw pillows that also feature geometric prints with bright punches of color. Arrange glass vases in different shapes, sizes and colors on glass shelves on the walls.

By incorporating these tips into your living room design, you will be able to create a space that has a fun, funky and inspiring modern look.
