A friend came to my house the other day and was rather taken with what she saw on my sitting room wall. After staring at it closely as if she was at the Louvre she eventually gave in and asked what it was.
I told her it was a wall sticker. She frowned.” A sticker for the wall” I ventured and told her it was made from the same material you see on delivery vans.
My friends eyebrows shot up in surprise and she had to sit down for a little while. When she had recovered her composure a little she asked how much it had cost. From her manner it was clear she was expecting me to name an incredible sum as my wall sticker of a group of trees covered a very large part of the wall. When I told her the modest amount paid her jaw dropped in the opposite direction that her eyebrows had gone and only the administering of a large gin and tonic was able to restore her equilibrium.
My friend groped around to find a flaw in this seemingly perfect world and zeroed in on what she clearly felt would be the sticking point, namely, the sticking. Surely for such a low price this must be a specialist product that requires arcane knowledge and great skill to realise correctly. Although it was obvious my response was going to unsettle her further I felt it necessary to be truthful and tell her that in fact I had applied the wall sticker myself in an unhurried and unharried manner one evening while listening to some light classical music on the radio.
By this point my friend had evolved from disbelief to a kind of mild hostility and implied that to achieve such dramatic results then I surely must belong to some kind of exclusive organisation where wall stickers are only available to a select band ‘in the know’ and that she would never be able to join in and would forever remain an outsider looking in. Enviously. I assured my friend that although not widely available on the high street, there are a considerable number of operations on the internet selling a huge array of wildly varying wall sticker designs. From tiny butterflies to whole forests just about anything you can think of has its own vinyl silhouette in an enormous range of sizes and colours at, as we have already established, a very reasonable cost.
Seeing that she would, after all, be able to join in my good fortune and adorn her own home with amusing stickers for the wall, my friend cheered up a bit.
Phew!
