Playing the Short Stack
With the dynamics of pokercome the dynamics of paying in two similar situations. Wait for the big hands
You have to come in and see that usually the big bully stacks at the poker table are more inclined to call more often because they can afford to. Many a player will raise with a-2 because they have enough chips to do so. In so doing they scare away players with less money to invest into play. So you absolutely must wait for big hands to play. That’s not enough though because if you play you need make sure people around you see you mean business when you raise. You do not want a marginal hand flopping Two Pair because you did not raise enough. The question of how much depends on position. Too much and you scare away all the action; too little and you might have someone “suck out” on you. Do not give your opponents a chance to strengthen their hand.
Be aggressive.
Being aggressive does not mean you do not pay attention to the board. Suppose you have pocket Jacks (J-J) and you raise and someone calls your raise with a weak Ace (A-3, A-6, A-8) and they hit an Ace on the flop, it is better to check than to make the mistake of betting into them and have them call you down. Chances they’ll check it because they think you have a higher kicker. So play aggressive, but be aggressive and smart.
Play Position
The best scenario with Texas Holdemis if you have a good hand in late position, by good hand I mean a pair of tens or better. This is works best with a few limp-ins and a raise. As long as you have position you will likely eliminate a few players, giving you better odds of win the hand.
Know who you’re playing
If you get a sense that one of the big stacks is tight, take advantage of it if you are in a showdown situation. More than likely if you raise they will fold if they have hit nothing. Now with aggressive players you need to try and trap them. Let’s say you have Ac-10c and they have Qd-10d and you’re first to act. Call and let them do the raising for you. Even better the flop is 8c-9c-Jc, you let them think they’re leading with a top pair. I’d call them and if they’re smart enough they won’t put All-in. Let’s say the river ends up being 8c-9c-Jc-7d-2c, they will try and get more money from you not knowing they’re sinking their own ship.
No Limit Texas Holdem is a dynamic poker style, but with the right pokerstrategy, plating the small stack will help improve it.
