One of people’s biggest considerations when traveling is how to get around once you arrive at your destinations of choice. Are you going to get ripped off for an airport taxi? Will public transportation be both available and reliable? Are you going to have more than one option if systems are old and lacking air conditioning?

These are all legitimate questions, and ones that you should be asking. Failure to consider these questions adequately can result in extremely uncomfortable and unhappy trips. Fortunately, though, the world is getting on the transportation bandwagon - no pun intended - big time. 

Getting to the airport doesn’t have to be treacherous

It’s gotten to be so much of a stereotype that there are memes floating around all over the Internet about it. Akh! Time to go to the airport. People run around frantically, grabbing last-minute items and panic over the time.

It doesn’t have to be this way at all anymore. With things like the availability of airport transfers, you can relax knowing that a driver is coming to get you. 3. Even if you do choose to negotiate, you can usually get a very good price if you do it the right way. Many countries have much lower standards of living than Europe and North America do, so even if you end up paying 10 USD, this is a big amount to a local but not a great loss for you.

Getting around town

Although not all countries are identical in their transport options, most countries are improving their systems dramatically. This means several things:

1. Public transportation is becoming cleaner, newer, and more widespread. In fact, some of the poorest countries in the world have some of the newest public transportation systems because they are just starting to develop. Indeed, you will find brand new electric buses with USB ports and video screens in what probably seem like the most unlikely places.
2. Uber and similar companies exist practically everywhere. These companies have broken taxi monopolies all over the world, and they provide a good, cheap alternative for quick rides around cities. Also, as drivers are rated by customers, you can make sure you will be getting an honest and courteous driver every time.
3. Things like bicycle shares are becoming increasingly common. All you have to do is download an app, and you can ride bikes all over many cities globally. A lot of places are even creating dedicated bike lanes to reduce the risk of riding on highly-trafficked roads.

The world awaits

You don’t have to worry about shoddy transportation on most vacations anymore. This is not to suggest that you shouldn’t do your homework. By all means, look up what is available and how reliable the options are in the places you’re going. But overall, you shouldn’t worry about getting stuck with nothing but terrible options in most places. The world is shaping up, and it’s waiting for you.
