The Gateway of India, one of the most prominent attractions in the city of Mumbai is a tourist spot and is largely visited by people from all over the country. This monument is closely situated to the famous Taj Hotel and holds an architectural glory.

history

The foundation for this beautifully constructed monument was laid back in the year 1911 on 31st March. Construction Info

The construction was very slow and it took so many years to complete the whole structure and finally, in the year 1924, it was done and was inaugurated on 4th December of the same year by The Viceroy, Earl of Reading. 

Architectural style

The monument was influenced by the Indo Saracenic style of architecture but apart from that, the Muslim architectural influences can also be seen in this monument. Researchers have also found that the monument closely resemblances the Gujarat style of architecture.  

Funds used for construction

The funds used by the Government of India to construct this monument were nearly 21 lakhs and is considered as one of the luxurious monuments of that time. But to be more surprised, the road to that monument was never constructed as there was a shortage of funds. 

Gateway

The monument which resembles a gigantic gate was actually constructed as the access and exit point to this country during the reign of British rulers. Even the last ships of the English left the country from this place and thus it was regarded as the chief gateway. 

Statues

Years after the independence, the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji as well as Swami Vivekananda were established at this Gateway of India. This symbolizes the true independence of India from the British reign. Tourists can visit this place while staying at any of the hotels in Mumbai near airport.

The grandeur of the monument depicts the symbol of pride for the British emperors and is still adds much glory to the city of dreams, Mumbai. The gateway has a total of five jetties among which all the four are operational. While visiting the city, you can book hotels in advance and can take a tour of the city. The city besides the monument has so many things to see that you will need a few days to complete your sight-seeing. Both Indian and foreign tourists throughout the year visit the city and make it a point not to miss their trip to the monument. Hence Gateway of India remains the chief attraction of all.
