The Tools: Attention and Intention

Attention is the mental focus on an object or thought. It's the act of directing your thoughts towards something,The Power of Four: Essential Words for Daily Use Articles whether tangible or abstract. A universal law states that wherever you direct your attention, you also channel your creative energy. In simpler terms, your thoughts shape your experiences.

On the other hand, intention is the goal or reality you wish to manifest in your life. It's the target of your desires. When you concentrate your attention on your desires and make it your intention to manifest them, you wield a creative force capable of monumental feats.

Alexander Graham Bell, the renowned inventor, spoke of this force, stating, "What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it."

The Four Essential Words

The four essential words that enable you to harness this creative force in your life are: "What do I want?" It may sound simple, but identifying what you truly want can be challenging. Moreover, once you determine what you want, you must then face the task of asking for it and accepting it.

There are times when you get what you want, only to find it's not as fulfilling as you anticipated. Consequently, you may find yourself merely accepting and enduring whatever life presents to you, whether it's your career, partner, income, or living conditions.

In this state of merely "enduring life," the more you focus on what you don't want, the more of it you experience. As fitness expert Susan Powter puts it, "Stop the insanity!"

The Power of Asking

Start using the question "What do I want?" daily. As Stephen Covey, the author of "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," suggests, write it down, highlight it, underline it. Keep asking until you find the answers.

Remember, you will always receive something, even if it's more of the same. My colleague and fellow coach, Bryden Manning, refers to this as "Christmas morning relationships." As a child, you knew you'd find presents under the tree on Christmas morning. But without a wish list, you had no control over what you'd receive.

The same principle applies to all areas of your life. Every day is like Christmas morning. You'll always receive something. Have you made your wish list yet?

If you struggle with this question, consider enrolling in a class or working with a coach. It's too crucial a question to ignore any longer. After all, it's your life.

Start today. Ask yourself, "What do I want?" The clearer you are about what you want, the more effectively you can focus your attention on it and make it your intention to manifest it.

In the words of the esteemed poet Walt Whitman, "claim your own at any hazard." It's your life! Make it great.
