American consumers may not recognize the MX-5 name at their local Mazda dealer because it has been traditionally known and recognized by another, more common moniker: The Miata.

While a number of Mazdas have been quite successful over the years, the Miata has endured as one of the brand’s top sellers. While it has been changed and improved with the rest of the line over the years, the many characteristics that have made it extremely popular around the world have remained in place, making it consistently appealing to a number of consumer markets and demographics.

Known as the MX-5 around much of the world and as the Eunos Roadster in Japan, Miatas are two-seater, rear-wheel drive roadsters that are known for being small in size and light in weight. The first was made in 1989 and, as it largely remains today, was fitted with limited features and additions. The idea in creating the car was to make a simple, enjoyably car that was not cluttered or burdened with too many features or add-ons and was instead focused on being fun to drive.

The original MX-5 was produced until 1997. Because of its popularity, very few chances were made in it over the years as it continued to test and sell well with consumers. It was finally altered in 1998, when the second-generation Miatas were released. The body style was somewhat altered and made to look somewhat sleeker and more stylish, however the most notable change was the removal of the previous model’s trademark flip-up, retractable headlights, which were replaced by more normal fixed headlights.

The third generation has been in production since 2005 and can be found at a Mazda dealer exclusively under the MX-5 name around the world, even though most American owners and fans of the brand still think of and refer to it as the Miata. They continue to be one of the most popular and best-selling convertibles in the world, with estimates of just under one million models sold to date.

The year 2010 marked the 20th anniversary of the line and saw a limited-edition model of the car available only through a Mazda dealer in Europe. Only 2,000 were made available in the car’s three original colors of red, white and blue.

Today a Mazda dealer has many other popular models available that offer a number of similar features to this classic line, but fans and owners of Miatas around the world will continue to attest to there being no other vehicle like it.
