There are 12 major ports available in India and 200 small and intermediate ports in the different part of the country which has triggered business not only for the shipping agency but growth of the country.

The 12 major ports in India are Kandla in Gujarat, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Jawaharlal Nehru in Maharashtra, Marmugao in Goa, Mangalore in Karnataka, Cochin in Kerala, Haldia in West Bengal, Paradip in Odisha, Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, Chennai in Tamil Nadu, Ennore in Tamil Nadu and Tutikorin in Tamil Nadu. These ports have a great role in triggering the shipping business in India.

Mumbai port is one of the biggest ports in the country where larger part of international business is being done. The major products those are being exported and imported are dry cargo, minerals and oils. Hence, the financial capital of Mumbai has remained the center of attention for the business of cargo and exports. Since Mumbai has always remained the center of attention for the international trade and commerce, it has created ample of opportunities for the shipping companies in Mumbai to make lucrative business.

Though Mumbai is famed to have bigger revenue generator, it is not as bigger as Kandla port in Gujarat. Kandla port which is located in the Gulf of Kutch is said to have largest port in the country that operates major cargo business for the nation.

As a matter of fact, different ports have different global business and trade role considering its location and availability of the products. Therefore, Mumbai port is different than Kandla port and Kandla port is different than Marmugao which deals in only iron ore that transports more than 27.33 million tons of iron ore traffic.

Paradwip port is an artificial port where plethoric coals and iron ore business are being done after the independence of the country. Since Odisha has got larger coal mines as well as iron ore, Paradip port has got a bigger role in generating revenue for not only the state of Odisha but also India. This port is being operated by the jointed ventures of state and national government.

Among all the ports, Mumbai port has been considered as the gateway of India. It is one of the oldest port which was first established in 1870 AD. Since it is an oldest and popular port destination, it has facilitated many shipping agents in Mumbai to setup their lucrative business organization. Today, the port of Mumbai has expanded to a great extent. However, the growth of this port has been confined due to population pressure since 1970. It is has expanded its wings to Navi Mumbai on the Konkan mainland.
