It would be nice to think that it should be possible to enjoy every minute that is spent at the workplace. Things do not always, however, go according to plan. You will undoubtedly have experienced occasions where you will have started to worry about productivity levels and progress.

It's natural that you should want what is best for the business, but that you should also give due consideration to the needs of individual members of staff. This can sometimes be difficult to achieve, particularly when performance issues start to emerge.

There may also be personality clashes within the office, or conflicts that arise from a feeling that some people are working harder than others. You may even find that you begin to get drawn in to such issues. Before long, you may discover that you are at the very centre of such conflicts. This can be extremely difficult and you may find that you are left in a position where it's hard to be objective.

The whole situation can become even worse, if there is some suggestion that you have not handled everything as well as you might have done. You may begin to feel that you are under a certain amount of pressure. When faced with such circumstances, it's important that you seek to take positive action.

The worst possible response involves sitting back and simply hoping that things will get better. The unfortunate truth is that they rarely do. By choosing not to respond, you'll put yourself in a position where things are likely to get worse before they get better. Such a delay is only really likely to lead to more disputes and arguments.

Despite this, it's fairly to see how many managers do quickly fall into the trap of thinking that the problem may simply go away. Indeed, few of us really like getting into situations where we become involved in conflicts. We don't like to face up to the reality of the situation, particularly in cases where we feel that we are taking some sort of central involvement.

The answer will often be found by looking for external, objective assistance. By getting someone involved who doesn't have direct experience of the problems that are being encountered, it's possible for the situation to take a new direction. You may be thinking about the role that could be played by a neutral referee here, although things may be considerably less complex than you imagine.

You may discover, in reality, that there is a lot to be said for simply having an outsider who is willing to listen. Having this objective viewpoint in place can really ease communications, enabling the heat to be taken out of a situation.

Once disputes start to arise, you quickly discover that there are real difficulties associated with managing other people. If you can manage such problems well, then you will create a successful team.
